Anthony Perosh built capital with the UFC by being a johnny-on-spot fill in for the promotion at heavyweight back at UFC 110. It turns out that down at 205 pounds, his real weight class, he's a pretty solid fighter.
Perosh ran a ground clinic on Cyrille Diabate in the second round and finished the fight via rear-naked choke at the 3:09 mark in bout No. 2 of the main card at UFC 138.
"My first (UFC) win was great but I needed to back it up and I'm delighted to have done so. I've trained in boxing for only one year but I have focused on it twice as much as anything else and it paid off," said Perosh.
Perosh (12-6, 2-1 UFC) is a decorated jiu-jitsu fighter. The second-degree black belt stayed out of harm's way against Diabate, a dangerous muay thai striker.
When Diabate got a little sloppy, Perosh saw the opening and scored a takedown just 55 seconds into the second round. From there, Perosh switched between side control and mount, and worked through a series of potential submissions.
Perosh tried for an arm-triangle choke with 3:05 left in the round. He released it to reset and work from the mount where he softened up Diabate with big punches. The Frenchman spun to give his back. Perosh flattened him out and pounded away again with heavy shots. The choke was there, so Perosh took it. Diabate (17-8-1, 2-2 UFC) survived for four more seconds before tapping.
Perosh, 39, is now 2-0 down at 205 pounds. Back in February at UFC 127, Perosh took out Tom Blackledge.
