Number 3?s Keys to Bowling Green? | Couch Fire Sports | WVU ...

Let?s not kid ourselves here.

It really doesn?t matter what our offense does against Bowling Green. ?Geno will get his yards and likely A LOT of them. ?We may or may not run the ball, but does it really matter? ?Probably not against the Falcons? but in reference to Billy Hoyle?s poll, my answer is we have to get something going. ?Anyone.

And while we can?t take this Bowling Green team lightly (see: Norfolk State), I feel this is a much different team after LSU.

Sure, we?re a 20 point favorite, but all I care about are MISTAKES and SPECIAL TEAMS. ?Although I?d be amiss to not point out that the Falcons are 3-1 and are among the top 25 in the country in both total offense and total defense. And if not for a blocked extra point in a 28-27 loss to Wyoming, they could easily be coming to town at 4-0 and looking to shock the ?Eers.

But, I return to mistakes and special teams.

It won?t matter that the crowd will be much less than the exciting atmosphere that enveloped Milan Puskar Stadium against the Tigers on primetime ABC? I think we?ll be fine on our own turf.

IF we can play solid on special teams and not make stupid mistakes.

Holgorsen has stated he?s not going to make wholesale changes on special teams, but that?s likely just coach speak? because HE WILL make sweeping changes if things don?t get fixed.

We know we?re going to see a lot more starters stepping in on kicks to lay the lumber and put a body on someone? and I?m frankly excited about that. ?Many NFL teams have prided themselves on playing the BEST players on special teams, regardless of starting status or position. ?WVU could use a little bit of that mindset, especially coming off an LSU game where one singular 99 yard return closed the door on any chance of a WVU?victory.

Moreover, we can?t have stupid-ass holding calls, personal fouls, or turnovers that haunted us against the now #1 team in the land in the AP poll.

Where we can lose to Bowling Green in a MAC showdown embarassment would be if we turn the ball over several times or provide them points off of turnovers. ?The statistics in the football world are against any team that turns the ball over, and rises with each subsequent butterfinger slip of the ball or a misplaced or errant pass.

So, despite ?only lining up twice against?these cats previously, a 62-14 victory in 1988 and 24-17 dubya in 1991? it?s going to come down to basic, common football.

WVU has to continue to improve as we gear up for league play and the BCS spot that is at stake, and there?s just one way to make sure we come out ahead.

And it?s not Geno?s arm or this offense. ?It?s basic football that dictates the victor will win the turnover war and can keep the penalties to a minimum.

Saturday will be a test to see just how much we?ve adjusted in those areas.
