Children's Health & Fitness ? Nurses Educate Youth To Combat ...

July 2nd, 2012 by Len Saunders

From Nurse.com?..

With more than one-third of American adults classified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, national programs and initiatives have sprouted to address weight issues earlier in life. Childhood obesity, defined as a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for youth of the same age and sex, now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the U.S., the CDC reports. This is triple the rate of a generation ago.

Because of the increase in childhood obesity, national initiatives, such as first lady Michelle Obama?s Let?s Move! Campaign, have encouraged parents, teachers and students to pay closer attention to food intake and activity levels. Schools also are dedicated to combatting the problem; for example, Wellspring Academy in Brevard, N.C., a boarding school for obese children ages 11 to 19.

New York and New Jersey programs also are doing their part toward prevention. In 2010, the NuHealth Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NuHealth System in East Meadow, N.Y., conducted a study of sixth- and eighth-grade students in the Roosevelt (N.Y.) Union Free School District to assess students? BMIs and the prevalence of overweight and obese children. The results of the study showed 44% of the students in the Long Island school district were overweight or obese, higher than the CDC?s national average of about 30%.

How Combat Tai Chi Uses Traditional Chinese Medicine Part I - Artipot

Chinese civilization has studied both medicine and the martial arts for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. It would be surprising if a blending of these traditions had not taken place. Behind the graceful movements of Tai Chi practice lies a combat art that is as sophisticated as it is deadly.

Combat Tai Chi relies on meridian theory elaborated by Traditional Chinese Medicine. Running through the body, there are pathways of energy. The energy or qi that runs through the body is not a mystical substance. Instead, chi can be understood in western scientific terms in light of physics and biology. Meridian theory is one of the building blocks of of acupuncture, Qigong and other Chinese healing arts.

Tai Chi is best-known for its health benefits. Many people in the United States practice Tai Chi in order to live healthier lives while paying little attention to the martial aspects of the art. In order to fight well, a martial artist must be in good health in general. Among many other health benefits, Tai Chi develops the health of its practitioners through encouraging good flow of chi through the meridians of the body. This basic level of health is a foundation on which other aspects of the art are built. Tai Chi enables its practitioners to direct qi or energy in a combat setting in order to do damage against opponents.

There are many different meridian lines in the body. For example, the kidney meridian runs from the bottom of the foot in the middle up through the kidney area up through the top of the chest area to the underside of the back of the tongue. In some places, the meridians are deeply buried in the body and are therefore hard to access for a health professional such as an acupuncturist or for a martial artist.

However, in other places, the meridians run right underneath the surface of the skin. These easy access points to the meridians are pressure points. You might have had a friend or a massage therapist press hard on a pressure point spot in order to release tension. This technique is actually using the meridians of the body.

In the United States, pressure point strikes are the most well-known (though not very well understood) martial application of Chinese Traditional Medicine. A martial artist hits a specific point or combination of points on the body yielding a knockout or some other dramatic effect. Tai Chi uses these kinds of hits in many different ways.

Pressure point strikes can be used to accomplish a wide variety of goals. Some of them can cause the muscles or tendons on an opponent to seize up or even displace bones. Others directly affect the meridians of the body. There are pressure point strikes that can cause blockages in meridians or reverse the flow of chi. Others can even reverse or close off the flow of blood through veins or arteries.

In part II: Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine team up for deadly force with Dim Mak or Death Touch.

So Long GBTV, Glenn Beck's Web TV Network To Rebrand As ...

One year after officially announcing his new web-TV venture GBTV, former Fox News host Glenn Beck is changing it up. Beck?s company, Mercury Radio Arts, will merge GBTV with TheBlaze.com, its news and opinion website, and Markdown.com, its eCommerce site, into one multimedia company, to be called TheBlaze.

As part of the merger, GBTV will now be called TheBlaze TV. CNN?s Steve Krakauer spoke to Beck about the change:

?I didn?t like the name GBTV from the very beginning for a couple of reasons,? Beck said in an exclusive interview with CNN.com. ?One, it?s a little egocentric, and two, it?s television, which doesn?t describe necessarily what we do.?

Executives at GBTV and TheBlaze, who include former Fox News executive Joel Cheatwood, Premiere Radio Networks executive Kraig Kitchin and former Huffington Post CEO Betsy Morgan will take on slightly tweaked roles in the new venture as co-presidents, each overseeing an aspect of the new company. More information on those roles, after the jump.

For GBTV, the move helps align the company?s fastest-growing properties under one umbrella. TheBlaze.com has quickly established itself as a viable news and commentary site, while GBTV continues to add new subscribers every month. By combining resources and a name, the company may be able to shuttle visitors back and forth, and make it easier for new visitors to wrap their head around the products the company produces.

MERCURY RADIO ARTS MERGES STREAMING VIDEO NETWORK GBTV WITH NEWS AND INFORMATION SITE THEBLAZE TO CREATE A SINGLE MULTIPLATFORM MEDIA COMPANY

Merger Builds on the Quick Success of both GBTV and TheBlaze Which Receives Over 7 Million Unique Visitors Per Month

Combines GBTV?s Line-up of Programming With TheBlaze.com?s Growing Team of More than 25 Journalists Into One Powerful Brand

Mercury?s E-Commerce Site The Marketplace by Markdown.com, Will Also Be Integrated Into New Entity

The Merged Network, Called TheBlaze Will Be An Online News, Information, Entertainment and E-Commerce Destination Spanning Video, Radio, Publishing and The Internet

(New York, NY and Dallas, TX June 18th) Mercury Radio Arts, Glenn Beck?s multi-media production company, announced today that it is merging GBTV, its streaming video network with TheBlaze, its news and information website to create a single multiplatform media company. The new entity, which will be known as TheBlaze, combines one of the world?s largest subscription streaming video networks with a website that generates over 7 million unique visitors per month into one powerful multimedia brand. TheBlaze, which will soon offer video content on a 24/7 basis, will be a news, information, entertainment, and e-commerce network, spanning all media including video, radio, publishing, and the Internet.

Glenn Beck said: ?I said from the very beginning that I did not want to call the network GBTV, and a year later I finally got my way. We have ambitious plans for this network and combining the power of GBTV and TheBlaze will help us build upon our success.?

The Marketplace by Markdown.com will also be integrated directly into TheBlaze.com, giving small businesses that participate in the marketplace access to an even larger audience of potential consumers, and rounding out TheBlaze?s revenue mix to include e-commerce.

TheBlaze will offer a mix of premium subscription video content and free content:

The premium subscription content will be what is currently known as GBTV, a streaming video network featuring Glenn?s weekday show. Since its launch in September 2011, the network has already added a wide range of original programming, including the reality show Independence USA, the kid?s show Liberty TreeHouse, the news show Real News, and the comedy news show The B.S. of A, totaling over 34 hours of original programming per week. The network will soon provide video content on a 24/7 basis. Beginning later this year, existing subscribers to GBTV.com will be automatically redirected to TheBlaze.com. The network will also continue to be available on iOS devices, Roku and Boxee.

The free content will be available at TheBlaze.com and will continue to include a mix of original reporting, curated content and opinion pieces.

Christopher Balfe, President and COO of Mercury said: ?TheBlaze and GBTV have each proven to be incredible success stories in a very short period of time. Combining them will help us accelerate future growth by focusing on one world-class brand that offers the best of everything we produce in a single destination.?

TheBlaze?s executive team, which will report to Balfe, brings years of experience from leadership level positions in television, radio and digital media:

Betsy Morgan, formerly President of TheBlaze is being promoted to President & Chief Strategy Officer of the combined company. Prior to joining Mercury, Morgan was CEO of The Huffington Post and a Senior Vice President at CBS News.

Joel Cheatwood, formerly President of Programming at GBTV is being promoted to President & Chief Content Officer of TheBlaze. Prior to joining Mercury, Cheatwood was a Senior Vice President at FoxNews and CNN.

Kraig Kitchin, formerly Director of Ad Sales at TheBlaze is

being promoted to President & Chief Revenue Officer of the combined company. Prior to joining Mercury, Kitchin co-founded Premiere Radio Networks-the top radio network in the country and the distributor of Glenn?s radio show.

Carolyn Polke, formerly Senior Vice President of Digital at Mercury is being promoted to President & Chief Operating Officer of TheBlaze. Carolyn has helped spearhead Mercury?s recent digital growth. Previously, she was a consultant at Accenture.

Scott Baker, who has been with TheBlaze.com since its launch, will continue in his role as Editor-in-Chief.

TheBlaze will be fully integrated with The Marketplace by Markdown.com, a curated marketplace platform to help local small businesses reach consumers across the country. Keith Ferry, former President of Markdown joins TheBlaze as Senior Vice President of Digital.

TheBlaze also includes a monthly magazine and news updates delivered each morning on Glenn?s radio show.

Is America heeding Watergate's lessons, 40 years on?

Four decades after Watergate, experts and protagonists in the 20th century's worst US political scandal worry that its lessons are melting away, amid deepening Washington dysfunction and a return of sweeping presidential power.

Sunday marks exactly 40 years since a handful of third-rate burglars were arrested at the tony Washington building as they broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters.

What followed was a series of revelations about hush money, espionage, secret recordings and an elaborate cover-up that shocked the world -- a scandal so explosive it reached the highest echelons of power and ultimately brought down president Richard Nixon, who resigned in disgrace in August 1974.

Much of what we know about Watergate first came to light through the gumshoe reporting of The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, whose work became the user's manual for investigative reporting.

But a man who had a profound effect on the aftermath of Watergate said students of history should focus directly on the occupant of the White House at the time, and his terrifying abuse of executive authority.

"It is not a journalism story. It's all about Richard Nixon," historian, author and retired professor Stanley Kutler told AFP.

It was Kutler's successful 1990s lawsuit against Nixon and the National Archives that forced the release of the long-suppressed tapes from the recording system that the president had ordered installed in the White House.

The recordings, he said, show a paranoid and vengeful president who spent an inordinate amount of time ordering underlings to dig up dirt on his opponents.

"Nixon had enemies, imagined and real," many of whom had emerged in the heat of a divisive Vietnam war when Washington was overrun with thousands of protesters, Kutler said.

"From Vietnam, we didn't learn the lesson that there are limits to American power." And Watergate showed Americans "the limits of presidential power," he said.

"Take those two events, Vietnam and Watergate, and you get a new country after that."

Woodward and Bernstein last Sunday were quick to point to the "enormous" crimes committed by Nixon and the various "wars" he launched -- against the anti-war movement, the press, Democrats who threatened to rob him of a second term, and the Watergate cover-up and obstruction of justice.

"Really what we found is that his White House became, to a remarkable extent, a criminal enterprise such as we've never had in our history," Bernstein told CBS.

Americans have always had a healthy distrust of government. It's part of the country's makeup, said Steve Billet, who directs the Masters in Legislative Affairs program at George Washington University.

But as Watergate unfolded, "the government turned into the enemy," Billet said. "It became the fulfillment of a prophecy that government might endanger our liberties, and it did."

As Americans remained suspicious of the potential for malfeasance and abuse in the White House, that dire assessment undermined confidence in the government and the president, and that persists to this day, Billet and others say.

Kutler said he believes Watergate "had a lot to do with superheating our political climate," in which partisanship is the order of the day on Capitol Hill.

"Everything is done in the context of politics today," he said. "This is the way our minds are working now."

The investigation of Watergate and its vast cover-up ultimately sent 40 Nixon aides and others to jail.

Among them was John Dean, who was counsel to Nixon at the time of the Watergate break-in and eventually cooperated with the probe.

He now warns of a return to excessive executive power, particularly in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks.

"Watergate's warning has steadily lost its power over the years, particularly given fear of terrorism during the past decade," Dean wrote this week in The New York Times.

"That fear has been used to justify levels of presidential power that Nixon could have only dreamed possible."

Dean cites a long list of presidential excesses: Ronald Reagan's abuses during the Iran-Contra episode; Bill Clinton's deceit during the Monica Lewinsky affair; George W. Bush's commitment to war in Iraq based on "fake intelligence;" and President Barack Obama's continued detention of US citizens who are deemed terror threats.

And with abuse inevitably inviting scandal, it may be just a matter of time before a new bombshell like the one 40 years ago.

"I can certainly imagine another Watergate," said author Thomas Mallon, whose book "Watergate: A Novel" came out in February.

With information the most valued currency in politics, the next great scandal "would certainly involve something like hacking," Mallon said.

"People have learned to be more cautious," he said, but "at some point in American history, there will be some scandal that eclipses Watergate."
