LG's Q1 2012 earnings show greater profits on strong TV, phone sales
LG has released its Q1 2012 numbers, and there's plenty of good news to go around, with TV profits that nearly doubled and profit from cellphones for the second quarter in a row following six straight quarters of losses. Despite slightly lower sales, more of the units that did sell had higher prices and made more profit. In its press release, the company claimed to have "turned the corner" with a net profit of $215 million, blaming the slower sales of TVs on the European economy and cellphones on declining featurephone sales. We don't have specific numbers, but it called out the popularity of the Optimus LTE and Optimus Vu as part of the reason for increased revenues. Of course, the year is only just getting under way, and the company is expected to introduce its first 55-inch OLED HDTV soon, as well as quad-core smartphones and a new L-style series of phones. Before that however, it will have to deal with the competition from fellow Korean giant Samsung which will report its earnings later this week and has a few high profile releases up its sleeves as well. There's more details in the press release after the break, and PDF linked below.

Vodafone looking to buy Cable & Wireless, just can't resist that fibre-optic infrastructure
UK mobile giant Vodafone is planning to buy up commercial network provider Cable & Wireless for just over £1 billion ($1.7 billion). If successful, it'll gain a national fibre-optic broadband network (separate to BT and Virgin Media's), a large portfolio of business customers and a backbone venture that connects 150 countries with undersea cables. The latter will probably be sold off so that Vodafone can concentrate on winning more enterprise customers from its rivals while also easing the burden on its own network. It's also worth pointing out that C&W previously offered retail broadband and cable services, but any notion of Vodafone using this acquisition to offer the same would be pure guesswork.

Is it really an iPad 4G if it can't connect to a 4G network?
In Australia, Apple is defending the 4G designation on its new iPad, despite complaints from the?Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
In Australia, Apple brands its top-selling tablet the "iPad Wifi + 4G," a designation that seems to imply that the device will connect to a 4G signal. But as the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission recently pointed out, the iPad is not actually compatible with any of the 4G networks down under. This week, the issue made its way to an Australian federal court, which will decide whether or not Apple misled consumers.?
Skip to next paragraphAccording to the Australian newspaper, Apple has already agreed to issue refunds to shoppers who expected the new iPad to connect to the 4G network provided by local provider Telstra. But the company promised to fight the allegations from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and refused to remove the 4G moniker from the device.?
The phrase 4G, Apple said in a statement, "conveys to consumers in Australia that the iPad with WiFi + 4G will deliver a superior level of service in terms of data transfer speed (consistent with accepted industry and regulatory use of that term), and not that the iPad with WiFi + 4G is compatible with any particular network technology promoted by a particular mobile service provider in Australia."
In other words, 4G is not a matter of any specific network, but a matter of speed.?
In a smart post over at ZD Net, Zack Whittaker breaks down the reason the iPad won't work on 4G networks outside the US and Canada.?
The new iPad, he writes, only works "on the 700Mhz and the 2100Mhz bands of the mobile spectrum. Other countries have already allocated their wireless spectrum to other things ? like in the UK, the 700Mhz band is reserved for free-to-air digital Freeview television, and similarly in Australia, the band is used for analogue television.?UK customers are doubly out of luck, because the wireless spectrum designated for?4G LTE services hasn?t been divided up yet."?
So that being said, do you believe Apple has a duty to rebrand the iPad in the Australian and European markets? Drop us a line in the comments section.?

China Times: HTC wants to develop its own processors for low-end phones
Encroaching into the semiconductor business might not seem the most obvious move for a phone manufacturer that's trying to unify its efforts. Nevertheless, China Times reports that HTC has signed a "memorandum of cooperation" with ST-Ericsson to co-develop a new dedicated chip for low-end handsets coming out next year. Since ST-Ericsson is a fabless chip designer, HTC won't risk getting silicon between its fingernails. Instead, if this agreement is what it seems, the Taiwanese manufacturer may simply want more direct control over its supply chains and to reduce its current reliance on ready-made designs from Qualcomm or NVIDIA. After all, it can't be easy for HTC's new CFO, looking on while others gobble up those margins.
